Hey there! For this blog post, I won’t get into any gaming or anything fancy—I just want to let you know how my posts are going.
So, How is the Backlog Project Going?
It’s been doing… okay. I’ve gone through almost 15 games, a few of them done through mini-reviews. I was a bit more inconsistent in January and February, but I did start to keep up a pace in March, and my now I have 9 full reviews on my website. For 3 months of work, I’d say that’s decent! I would say that it has been a successful attempt at trying out solo games more rapidly, and I’ve also played a couple with my roommate, who should be chiming in from time to time.
Job seeking has been somehow worse than having a job, though, and with one month of employment, turning on a game that I might not be comfortable with can feel taxing. Constant rejection letters and increasingly niche job boards and job applications have also made me dispirited, despite me knowing that this blog is part of my long-term goals.
This has sadly been interrupted by recent difficulties finding employment, which has been really stressful. I haven’t been able to motivate myself to write much, and while prospects are slowly improving, the stress of still being unemployed has gotten to me. I had a bit of content written in advance, but buffer’s gone now, and I don’t know how consistent I’ll be until I land a job.
I’ve also placed second in my WCQ playing Labrynth, which gave me an article that performed very well. Still, here’s how the content should look:
Every Tuesday Should Have a Full-Fledged Review
Full-fledged reviews are focused on going in-depth in one game. They will usually be about games which I’ve played to a finish, or at least a significant amount of it, where I try to analyze game mechanics, how they interact with the story or idea that the game is trying to convey, and whether I enjoyed my time with it or not.
They tend to have around 1,500 words, give or take, depending on how much it made me think,
For reference, I am aiming to keep mostly focused on indie games, though there will be exceptions. Expect a lot of visual novels, narrative-heavy games, and roguelikes.
For now, Tuesdays my “mandatory” posts, and wanted them to be high-quality. Right now, these are all reviews, but that might change as I explore new ideas.
During Saturdays, a Free-Form Article
I consider these “optional” posts. I have a few ideas floating around, but I’m not ready to commit to a weekly cadence. Still, I’d like to use Saturdays as a sort of “flex spot” where I can mix things up:
- I can do Yu-Gi-Oh articles, which thus far have only been about Labrynth. These could become “promoted” to Tuesday articles, but I don’t want to disrupt my solo gaming pace for now. I could also start talking about other deck brews I have, but I don’t have anything too polished yet.
- Opinion articles, which could talk about some personal experience with gaming, or ideas I’ve been sitting on.
- Mini-Reviews, where I talk about a few games in a much shorter, less nuanced takes about multiple games.
- Blog Updates (like this article!), where I talk about what’s going on behind the scenes.
This too might get expanded in the future, but I think that is a solid foundation.
In short: Tuesdays are for long-form, in-depth content (currently just game reviews), while Saturdays are my space for more casual, varied posts.
At What Stage am I With Quest and Roam?
Honestly, I felt like I was in a pretty good spot until the job hunt stress caught up with me. I’m hoping to bounce back soon.
That said, I do feel like the quality of the blog has gone way up. I’ve got screenshots with captions, original gameplay footage, and a clean layout. The site’s now on its own domain, with a proper About page, Contact Us, and even a Privacy Policy page (no, I don’t actually know what it says—it’s mostly for Google AdSense).
In the future, I might also post a calendar with planned content—though I want to find a steadier rhythm first.
And that’s all for this update! What type of posts have you enjoyed the most? If you’ve got any questions or suggestions, feel free to drop them in the comments!
